I was delighted to discover these photographs which brought back happy childhood memories. I lived in the Rookery between 1952 and 1966 and have photographs from that period of the house. I also have black and white photographs of the village that I took in the seventies. I would very much like to hear from anyone who might know anything about the history of the Rookery, especially about one of its former occupants, Hilary Holman Hunt.
Hello Felicity – I can remember your family living at The Rookery and you mother, yourself and your sister riding around the village past the farmhouse I lived in. I loved the horses and your mother once told my mother I could visit and ride one of the ponies, my mother being rather scared of horses never told me until years later. My late father did remember Hilary Holman Hunt and all the painting that hung on The Rookery walls. Hilary is buried at Rockland All Saints churchyard, last time I saw the grave it was rather overgrown, although the churchyard is kept extremely tidy. I did feel I should arrange to have it tidied as there is such a famous connection, but sadly never carried the idea any further, perhaps I will one day.
