Rockland St Peter

 

Herbert Barham

Private 1829 Herbert Barham was born in Rockland St Peter c1884. He enlisted in the 9th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France and Flkanders and was killed in action on 18th October 1916, aged 32. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial .

Bertie Kidd

Private 33066 Bertie Kidd was born in Rickenhall c1897 and a resident of Rockland St Peter. As a farm labourer, he originally enlisted as 7013 in the Middlesex Regiment in Attleborough on 1st December 1915, transferring to the 2nd Border Regiment on 1st September 1916. He embarked at Folkstone, serving in France and Flanders from 16th December 1916 and was killed in action on 26th October 1917 aged 20. He is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial.

William Leach

Private 16725 William Leech was born in Rockland St Peter c1882. He served in The Boer War. He enlisted in the 1st Norfolk Regiment in Norwich.He served in France and Flanders from 12th May 1915. He was wounded at Ypres on June 15th 1915 and brought to the military hospital at Epsom where he died on 21st July 1915. He was buried at Rockland All Saints Churchyard

Charles Lincoln

Private 200176 Charles Lincoln was born in Rockland All Saints c 1895. He enlisted in the 1st/4th Norfolk Regiment in Watton. He served in Palestine and was killed in action on 19th April 1917, aged 22. He is buried at the Gaza War Cemetery.

Frederick Lincoln

Private 17617 Frederick Lincoln was born in Rockland St Peter c1897. He enlisted in the 7th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France and Flanders from 5th October 1915 and died on 23rd July 1918, aged 21. He is buried at Cambrai East Military Cemetery.

Maynard John William Thurston

Lance Corporal7187 Maynard John William Thurston was born in Hingham c1881 and lived in Rockland St Peter. He enlisted in the 7th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France and Flanders from 16th August 1914 and was killed in action on 2nd April 1916, aged 35. He is buried at Vermelles British Cemetery.

Sydney Wright

Private 27901 Sydney Wright was born c1890. He enlisted in the 6th Yorkshire Regiment in Sowerby,Thirsk, North Yorkshire. He served in France and Flanders and was killed in action on 25th September 1917, aged 27. He is rememberde on the Tyne Cot Memorial. He was the son of Mr and Mrs A.Wrighjt of Anchor Corner.

Edward Ernest Curson

Sergeant 1706 Edward Earnest Curson was born in Rocklands c1896 and was educated at the Public School in Attleborough. He left for Australia with his family at the age of 17 and was working as a House Boy/Labourer. He enlisted in the 45th Battalion Australian Imperial Forces in Holdsworth, New South Wales, Australia on 2nd September 1915, embarking on HMAT Berrima from Sydney on 17th December 1915 for Suez where he arrived 23rd January 1916. Here he was admitted to hospital suffering from mumps. After recovering he departed Alexandria on 2nd June 1916 aboard Kinfauna Castle, arriving in Marseilles six days later. He served in France and Flanders and was awarded the Military Medal for gallentry in the trenches in early August 1916, after which he was promoted to Lance Corporal and subsequently to Temporary Corporal. He was promoted to Corporal on 29th October 1916, and later to Sergeant on 3rd December 1916. He was killed in action by a shell in front of Owl Trench at Messines on the afternoon of 7th June 1917, aged 21. He is remembered on the Ypres Menin Gate
EE Curzon’s Military Medal Citation: For meritorious services and devotion to duty near Pozieres from August 5th to 6th 1916. During most of that period the trenches were subjected to a very heavy bombardment. When his section commander was killed, he acted on his own initiative and took charge and superintende the repairing of the damaged trenches. By his courage and cheerfulness he got the utmost out of his men

 

 

 

Rockland All Saints
 

William John Baker

Private 15945 William John Baker was born in Shropham. He enlisted in the 9th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France and Flanders from 30th August 1915 and was killed in action on 15th September 1916, aged 29. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.

Elijah Issac Fincham

Private 29231 Elijah Issac Fincham was born in Shropham. He enlisted in the 9th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich on 12th April 1916. He served in France and Flanders from 26th October 1916. He served on the Ypres front where he was severely wounded in the right leg and was unconscious when admitted into the dressing station, where he died on 15th April 1918, aged 33. He is buried at Mont Noir Military Cemetery,St James-Cappel..

George Edward Fox

Private 28053 George Edward Fox was born in Rocklands. He enlisted in the 13th Essex Regiment in Norwich. He served in France and Flanders and was killed on 13th November 1916, aged 20. He is buried at Serre Road Cemetery.

Arthur William Green

Private Arthur William Green was born in Hadleigh,Suffolk. He enlisted in the 10th Essex Regiment in Norwich. He served in France and Flanders from 25th July 1915 and was killed in action on 7th January 1917. He is buried at Dantzig Alley British Cemetery. He was a resident of Swaffham.

Harry Webster Larter

Lance Corporal 14406 Harry Webster Larter was born in Breckles about 1887. He enlisted in the 9th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France and Flanders from 30th August 1915 and was killed in action on 18th October 1916, aged 30. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial

Reginald A. William Shepherd

Private 40904 Reginald A William Shepherd was born in Rocklands c1894. He enlisted in the 14th Worcestershire Regiment in Marylebone,London. He served in France and Flanders and was killed in action on 12th August 1917,aged 23. He is buried at Bailleul Road East Cemetery, St Laurent Blangy.

Edgar Clarke

Private 22412 Edgar C. Clarke was the son of Luther Jacob Clarke and Maud Caroline Clarke of Chapel Street, Rockland St Peter.He was a member of 7th Battalion, The Royal Norfolk Regiment and died of wounds received in action on 24th November 1916, aged 20. He is at buried in Bristol (Arnos Vale) Cemetery.

Walter Clarke

Private 22410 Walter William Clarke was the son of Luther Jacob Clarke and Maud Caroline Clarke of Chapel Street, Rockland St Peter. He was a member of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment. He died on 27th January 1916, reportedly drowned in an accident from a Troopship and is buried in Felixstowe Cemetery

Clement Overton

Signaller 183173 Clement William Ovverton was the son of Mr W. and Mrs E. Overton and husband of Ada, all of Rockland All Saints.He was a member of C Battery, 155th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He died in hospital in France on 23rd September 1918, aged 32, having been exposed to a poison gas attack and is buried in the Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France. He was awarded the Military Medal. He is remembered on a memorial in the Methodist Cemetery, Rockland St Peter and on a memorial near Tower Bridge,London.

Frederick Brown

Frederick Brown was a Dr Barnado’s Boy who was brought up in Rocklands by the Clover family. He attended Thetford Grammar School and later became a schoolteacher at Great Ellingham. He was a member of the RAFVR and was involved in ferrying aircraft across the Atlantic Ocean for Transport Command. He was lost on one of these flights.

Alec Dove

Corporal 5773768 Alec George William Dove was born 3rd June 1918 and was educated at Thetford Grammar School. He was a member of the Royal Norfolk Regiment. He died on 6th December 1943 whilst a Prisoner Of War working on the Thai-Burma Railway. He is buried at the Chungkai War Cemetery, Thailand.

Leonard Houchen.

Private 577364 Leonard Houchen lived at Anchor Corner and attended Rocklands School. He was a member of the Pioneer Corps, and died in a shooting accident on 9th August 1941 Aged 22. He is buried at Rockland St Peter’s Churchyard.

Augustus Lee

William Male

Private 5774301 William Charles Male was a member of the 4th Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment. He arrived in Singapore with his regiment just before the surrender of Singapore. He was instructed to throw his rifleinto the sea and then run. This he did but was killed by machine gun fire on 11th February 1942 Aged 25. He is buried at Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore.

John Peck

Private 5778254 Edward John Peck lived in Rectory Road, Rockland All Saints. He was sent to Singapore with the Royal Norfol Regiment and died on 26th January 1942, aged 21. His name is recorded on the Singapore Memorial

  1. Thank you very much for this research. I also believed Sydney Wright to be 27901 Yorkshire Regt but have since found a different candidate – Pte 43528 Sydney Charles Wright, 2Bn Northamptonshire Rgt. died 1 March 1918 (Nine Elms British Cemetery). His half sister Miss Doris Long of ‘The Briers’ Rockland St Peter chose the inscription for his headstone ‘AT REST’. His story is in the Shellrock Benefice Casualty Tribute book under the War Memorial in St Peters Church. Or I could email you a copy.
